The ‘Indian Act’: A Hard Act to Find

Now, if you’re like me, you occasionally find yourself needing to refer to every First Nations person’s favorite piece of legislation, the Indian Act.

For many, it can be a bit of a slog to locate the Act in its most user-friendly form. So, to help make that task a little bit easier, we tracked it down for you. Herewith, for your, uh, viewing pleasure: the Indian Act, all in one piece, ready to read, search or print.

Before you go there, though, a quick note. The page is on the Justice Canada site, which is in the midst of an overhaul, so you will encounter an intervening page that requires you to scroll down to the bottom and click through to the intended link. Oh, the irony.

Over time, we will no doubt come to explore every aspect of the Act, perhaps the most totalizing single piece of legislation ever to appear on Canada’s books. If there’s a particular aspect you want us to explore, drop us a comment or get in touch with me.
