What, if anything, could this ministerial switch mean in terms of possible policy changes [...] . . . → Read More: POLL: Does Canada’s new Indian Affairs minister signal a change in policy?

Canada’s employment equity policies (known as “affirmative action” in the U.S.) could be headed for a major overhaul after an Ontario woman was blocked from applying for a job with the federal government because she’s white. Sara Landriault was filling out an application for a job as an administrative assistant with Canada’s Department of Citizenship and [...] . . . → Read More: POLL: Is it fair to reserve some government jobs just for Aboriginal people and visible minorities?

Ah, the Indian Act. You know it, you hate it, you’re one of millions wondering what to do with it. Shawn Atleo thinks he knows. In fact, this week the Assembly of First Nations leader urged that the Act be repealed and replaced in its entirety by no later than 2015. Replaced with what, you ask? Atleo [...] . . . → Read More: POLL: Should the Indian Act be gone by 2015?

With posts on the arguments for and against Bill C-3 now up on our site, it only seems fitting that we conduct a poll to hear what you think. Admittedly, these options are a bit reductive, especially given the confusing legal labyrinth that make up Status inheritance laws, but we thought we’d test the waters — after [...] . . . → Read More: POLL: Should We Keep or Kill Bill C-3?

Yesterday around 3:30 am, an Ottawa branch of the Royal Bank of Canada was torched in the name of “aboriginal peoples, workers and the poor” of British Columbia. It then appears the people responsible posted a video of the fire-bombing. The brief video of the actual incident is followed by a message (full text [...] . . . → Read More: Activists Fire-Bomb Ottawa Bank in Name of Indigenous Rights: What Do You Think? POLL

The always interesting Blue Corn Comics by Rob Schmidt has recently come across a TV ad for Koff “Indian” Beer (a Carlsberg product) that Schmidt believes “emphasizes the uncomfortable connection between Indians and alcohol.” See for yourself: Huh. You don’t see that very often: teepee-as-nightclub. Here’s another spot in the series, which I believe came out in [...] . . . → Read More: Controversy Brews Anew Over Koff “Indian” Beer Ads
